President and CEO of the PA Chamber of Business and Industry Gene Barr wrote this op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that discusses the future of natural gas in our state.
“As our nation continues working toward economic recovery, natural gas has helped add jobs and investment here in Pennsylvania. Thanks to abundant supplies and affordable prices, natural gas is enabling industries to put people back to work in the Keystone State. In addition, natural gas is among the clean energy solutions available to meet our growing power generation and transportation demands both today and into the future.
Using natural gas for power generation, transportation and manufacturing were topics discussed extensively by the governor’s Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission, on which I had the honor to serve. The commission’s recommendations ranged from promoting the use of cogeneration technology (known as combined heat and power), to developing “green corridors” for natural gas vehicles and removing barriers to greater use of Pennsylvania produced energy for the conversion of mass transit and school bus fleets to natural gas, to maximizing downstream natural gas use, such as in chemical manufacturing, plastics and other uses.”
